Repositories in Washington, DC, and Surrounding Areas

Washington, DC, and surrounding areas are rich with general and specialized repositories to help break that brick wall or fill in more about an ancestor. Come early to the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference or stay after to research. The Library of Congress, National Archives. and Daughters of the American Revolution Library are just three of many repositories, some just a Metro ride from the conference site.

Plan ahead. Before you arrive, visit the repository’s website so you can make the most of your onsite time. Some require appointments and others, including the Library of Congress and the National Archives, require a photo ID to obtain a researcher’s card. Please take advantage of the many family history resources available in the area.
